Ling & Louie’s Presents Whiskies of the World Dinner
What specifically do you know about whiskey? I know a few things, the most important of which is that September is a 30-day celebration of the “water of life”.
It is believed the distillation of the world’s most popular spirit dates back to the Babylonians of Mesopotamia in the 2nd millennium BC (Wikipedia says so, folks.) Distillation has changed profoundly since then and has grown into an art all over the world.
Random and Interesting Facts About Whiskey
- Whiskey can pretty much last forever. An unopened bottle kept out of sunlight can last longer than you and I can! An opened bottled. sealed properly after use, can last for years.
- Whiskey can be made from any grain. While it is commonly made from rye, barley and corn, grains like quinoa, farro, spelt, and buckwheat will work as well and there are a few artisanal distilleries that prove that today.
- Love that rich caramel color of your favorite whiskey? That’s all because of the barrel. Whiskey is clear before barreling.
- Your love of whiskey, spirits and distilling can lead to a PhD. That’s my kind of doctor!
- George Washington, you know the first president of these great United States, opened up a distillery in 1799 and was the largest producer of whiskey in the country.

While Ling & Louie’s has often taken the month of September to celebrate National Bourbon Heritage Month, but they mixed things up a bit this year and include bourbon with whiskeys from all over the world, including Japan.
