PROBAR: Healthy, no-brainer back-to-school treats

Posted on: August 22nd, 2012 by Amy Martin No Comments

A new school season is in full swing and families are just settling in to a brand-new schedule. I kind of like to think of back-to-school season as a ‘new beginning’ of sorts… much like New Year’s Day. Parents start off strong, organized and armed with a plan. Kids gear up for the year clothed in brand new threads, toting around notebooks full of crisp, unmarked paper and a pack of freshly-sharpened pencils. Much like starting the New Year, we set goals – one of them making an effort to pack our children healthy lunches and snacks to keep them energized and fueled throughout the school day. After the first few weeks, the ‘newness’ wears off and busy schedules and loads of homework can leave you out of fun, healthy lunch and snack ideas. Often times it’s easiest to grab a sweet-treat granola bar or individually packaged snack to throw in our kid’s backpacks… but there’s a brighter (and healthier) idea.

PROBAR, a natural foods company, makes organic non-GMO snacks and meal-replacement bars that are surprisingly delicious and good for you. Though the products aren’t marketed as a kids snack, there are plenty of flavors sure to entice your little teacher’s pet like the Old School PB&J (also a fun treat for teachers), Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip, Nutty Banana Boom, Apple Cinnamon Crunch and Double Chocolate. With PROBAR, your child’s special sweet-treats aren’t packed full of sugar or salt like other “healthy” on-the-go bars.

Sweetening the pot even further, everything PROBAR makes is 100% vegan, certified organic, certified non-GMO and raw.

But, don’t let the kids have all the fun – tuck a PROBAR in your purse or sack lunch for your own healthy treat or to get you jump started in the morning. The bars come in plenty of flavors – and they would make thoughtful gifts for your child’s teacher too.

I tried a few flavors myself and was surprised how much I loved them as I’m not usually fond of meal replacement bars. Without all the added ‘junk’ the purity of the ingredients really shines through and it’s amazing how delicious fruits, grains and nuts can be in their simplest state – raw. I was especially fond of the Koka Moka as it’s got the depth of coffee flavor that I’m always craving without any caffeine. Add in some chocolate, Brazil nuts, and almonds to that mix and I was in heaven.

If you’re not particularly fond of chocolate or crave a bar less ‘dessert-y’, the Cran-Lemon Twister has a refreshing, citrusy kick. If you are really looking to power through your day, try the Superfood Slam made with organic acai berries, pure raspberries, dark chocolate, barley grass, dates and other good stuff.
