International Sushi Day Gets Rolling at RA

Posted on: June 15th, 2016 by Taryn Jeffries No Comments

If I had to pick a favorite food, it would be a toss up between steak, sashimi, and sushi. With International Sushi Day around the corner, I thought we should get into the history of sushi and some fun facts.

International Sushi Day Gets Rolling at RA At its core, sushi is raw fish, rice, and seaweed. In the right hands, it is so much more. It takes a delicate hand to perfectly slice and handle the fish. Knowing the proper flavor combinations isn’t something that just comes to you.

The term sushi specifically refers to the way that the rice is cooked and then flavored with vinegar, not the fact that the fish is raw. So when someone calls sashimi sushi, though an honest mistake, it can make some people’s skin crawl.

If you want to get the low-down on all things sushi, you’re going to want to check out your closest RA Sushi on June 18th. RA Sushi will be holding Sushi and Sake  classes at all 27 locations across nine states. The interactive class will go through the history and culture of sushi. You will also get instruction on how to roll three different sushi rolls. You will also get a brief history of sake while sampling three different sakes to compare and contrast flavors.

The classes will take place at 11am and cost $35 without sake or $40 with sake sampling and instruction.

We have a few fun facts to tide you over until your official class on International Sushi Day

  • Sushi originated as a cheap fast food that people would eat at the theater. Sure beats popcorn!
  • To become a sushi chef there is a serious training program. It used to take 10 years of training before they could ever get a restaurant job.
  • Instead of saturating your sushi in soy sauce, you should only dip the fish part of the roll in the soy sauce.
  • It’s traditional to eat sushi with your hands, instead of with chopsticks. Save the chopsticks for your sashimi.

Check out the Valley RA Sushi location and make sure to call to make your class reservations.
