Food Truck Caravan rolls in to Old Town Scottsdale

Posted on: May 31st, 2013 by Amy Martin 2 Comments

There’s no denying that the ‘food truck craze’ isn’t showing signs of dwindling down any time soon. Some of the best plates of food I’ve ever eaten have come straight off of a truck, but it’s not always easy for me to track down my favorites. Living in Scottsdale, I’m lucky to be able to enjoy some of the Valley’s best trucks when they take over the Whole Foods parking lot up at Raintree, but that’s only once a month.

I’ve longed to take advantage of Phoenix’s Food Truck Fridays on more of a regular basis, but traveling to central Phoenix on a weekday is a big stretch for me. That’s why I’m thrilled that the City of Scottsdale is supporting a weekly food truck concept in downtown Scottsdale!

Lori Baker, a Scottsdale entrepreneur and owner of The Barter Group and Edible Exchange is spearheading the effort, in collaboration with Casey Stechnij of SuperFarm Food Truck. This ‘Food Truck Caravan’ will take place every Saturday night from 7:30-11:30pm on the NW corner of 5th Ave and Goldwater, right in the heart of Old Town. The event will feature a rotation of up to eight of the Valley’s best gourmet food trucks each week, live music and a comfortable vibe.

They’ve already had their soft opening which drew a lot of buzz and excitement and included the Grilled Cheese Truck, Liberty Biscuits, Satay Hut, Spice It Up, Stickaberrry, SuperFarm Food Truck and Udder Delights. The official Grand Opening event is scheduled for Saturday, June 8th with a live performance from Spanish guitarists, the Sahnnas Brothers.

Locals hang out at community tables

Not only have they organized this event to bring our favorite food trucks a little closer to home, but they are hoping to encourage event goers to hang out for awhile and support local merchants in the area. Lori Baker talks about the Ate on 5th program: “We’re really excited to bring a new concept to Scottsdale. Our Ate on 5th program will allow guests to receive discounts to participating area merchants, restaurants and bars by purchasing food off one of the food trucks.”

Circle the date and come check it out! To learn more, visit foodtruckcaravan.com.

Sounds great! I hope it grows to many more trucks. I love Food Truck Friday in central Phoenix; may the Scottsdale Food Truck Caravan be as successful and popular or more so! For those who don’t know the Sahnnas Brothers, they are fabulous! I have a bunch of their CDs; you will want to sit and drink and eat and enjoy their music all night when they perform.

    Great idea.

However, not enough seats (1/2 sitting on blacktop in parking lot), 10 minute line to order, 10-15 minute wait to make order and no bargains here. Bring cash!

Go to a real restaurant, score a chair and table and relax.
