Berlucchi Cuvee 61: A Sparkling Discovery

Posted on: December 4th, 2016 by Tom Peiffer No Comments

Getting ready to celebrate a little more of the seasonal levity this month?  There is no better way to do that than with bubbly.  Coincidentally, one of these shining sparklers is an Italian (oh yeah, one of their long-time traditions).  And for now, let’s steer to the southeast of Champagne region and take a taste of what the “Franciacorta” region has to offer.

Berlucchi Cuvee 61: A Sparkling DiscoveryIn 1961, three sparkling wine-loving partners pursued a dream to create a French-style bubbly with pizzazz, and Berlucchi was first bottled; they hit it big.  And just to celebrate that moment, they offer their wonderful blend, “Berlucchi Cuvee 61”.

Containing a lot of flavors that some may even call “Beau Joie like”, plus an explosion of bubbles that are over the top, this one will definitely take your Champagne glass by storm.  Tiny, long-lasting, expanding bubbles, that’s what it’s all about!

Consider this floating up out of the glass:  Vanilla, almonds, and traces of apricot.  Follow it up with a well-defined acidity that is not as much citrus as spice, fading into a crisp, peppery finish with a little more apricot.  You’ve got an Italian that’s really not so Italian, certainly not a Prosecco!  What they started in 1961 is still going strong.

So, if you are interested in a little “seasonality” this month and into the next, a Berlucchi Cuvee 61 may be a good choice to keep on the list.  This is especially true if you are expecting the kind of company who enjoys something a little different.  Compare it side-by-side with the Beau Joie if you like, but be prepared for the comments.  There’s a minor difference in price.

You can find it at Total Wine and more of these are also appearing bottle shops.  Prices are running between $20 and $30, a great value.  The expressive bubbles alone are worth shopping for.
