Oh Henry! Our Review of The Henry

Posted on: December 23rd, 2013 by Amy Martin 3 Comments

Last week, Fox Restaurant Concept’s newest restaurant, The Henry, opened and there’s already been some positive buzz. As the fifteenth restaurant of the Fox family, the new spot offers scratch-made American fare (both comfort food and fancier plates) for lunch and dinner and serves breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am-3pm. You can also pick up coffee, pastries and other goods any day of the week at their adjoining XV Coffee Bar & Larder from 6:30am to closing (and they have free Wi-Fi).

We headed in for dinner just after the opening to check out the menu. The space was already booming as the lounge (filled with couches, community tables and comfortable chairs for before or after dinner conversation) was packed and almost every table was occupied. Every square inch is amped with style from the extra-long booths, navy and gold studded walls, butcher block tables and dim lighting from mismatched tableside lamps. Even the menu font has style. The Henry would be perfect for a weekend date night, but suits just as well for a weeknight meal with the family as they also offer a kids menu and seem to be very family-friendly.

Starters

Their cocktail menu offers plenty to choose from, but I really appreciated their selection of Hank’s Homemade Sodas for someone like me who can’t have alcohol or regular soda. I ordered the Pineapple Passion Fruit Soda ($4)—a tart and tangy vacation in a glass. My dining companion sipped the Club House Margarita ($10) that he thoroughly enjoyed (twice).

The appetizers we selected were the star of the evening. Try the Grilled & Chilled Shrimp ($15) if you’re a shrimp cocktail fan. Served five to a plate and jumbo-sized, these are marinated, grilled, then chilled down and served with a spicy chipotle cocktail sauce and their creamy Henry Sauce (also served on their Diner Burger). These guys didn’t last long at our table—we loved how the cold, buttery shrimp still had a snap to them and were perfect for dunking in their slightly chunky cocktail sauce. A definite must-order.

The Chicken & The Egg ($10) seems to be a very popular choice for the season. Really, it’s Thanksgiving on a plate. Super moist chicken, crispy skin, and traditional herby bread stuffing is topped with a poached Hickman’s organic egg.  Break the egg and spoon some of that golden yolk all over the dish and it’s everything you love about Thanksgiving in a bite. If we hadn’t just finished two weeks of Turkey Day leftovers, we might have had to order a second plate!

Salad options include a Kale & Apple variation ($10) with McClendon apple, clementine, bacon, Amish cheddar and almonds as well as a Seasonal Ingredient Vegetable Salad ($12) and a Roasted Brussels Sprout Caesar ($8). I love the nuttiness of crisp, roasted Brussels sprouts so this was an instant pick for me and a great way to kick off our entrees.

Entrees

The Chevy Chase

Whether you’re in the mood for a heavier meal or lighter fare, there’s something here for any appetite. From the sandwich selections, The Chevy Chase ($18) is quite good as it’s made with New York steak topped with burnt onion, roasted mushrooms and Swiss, piled on a warm, garlic parmesan roll and served with fries. Entrée selections include the Long Bone Short Rib ($28) with a bourbon caramel glaze atop smashed potatoes and roasted mushrooms and the Thai Peanut Black Cod ($24) with shiitake, Chinese broccoli, red chili and ginger cardamom broth. Or, if you want to splurge on appetizers, the Roasted Half Chicken with rosemary lemon pan jus ($18) could be shareable for two. Along with it, you’ll get 2 picnic sides (like Brussels sprouts, cauliflower “polenta” or mac & cheese). Smelling this coming out of the kitchen made us wish we had ordered it for ourselves!

Dessert

Be sure to save room for dessert… we spotted a Blueberry Buttermilk Pie and a Chocolate Cake with chocolate ganache and toasted marshmallows—you won’t want to miss out!

The starters were my favorite. The grilled and chilled shrimp were large and had great flavor, and the the chicken and the egg was some of the best Thanksgiving flavors I have ever had.
