Chill Out with Southern Rail Cocktails

Southern Rail is quickly becoming the latest “must check out” restaurant. If you are looking for a spot that is steeped in history and is serving up some of the best comfort foods you can imagine, you will find it all here.

Southern Rail has two signature cocktails that serve as homage to two specific milestones in the coming month.  Medlock By Midnight and Gentleman Johnson pay homage to two historical figures who had quite an influence on the birth of Southern Rail.

Floyd W. Medlock

Drink: Medlock By Moonlight
Medlock played a significant role in the development of Medlock Place, the historical Phoenix neighborhood where Southern Rail resides. During the 1920’s Medlock advertised the affordability, modernity, and quality (rather than exclusivity) of his homes. With Phoenix’s strong agricultural economy and increasingly diversified business community, his unique marketing strategies and brilliant business mind helped keep the city alive during the stock market crash and Great Depression. Medlock’s success facilitated opportunities for other developers, allowing Medlock Place to continuously grow into what it is today. August 7 marks the 30thanniversary of Medlock’s death at the age of 84.

Medlock by Moonlight

Glass: Highball tumbler, fill with ice

2 oz. Smooth Ambler Rye Whiskey
¼ oz. Honey Syrup
¼ oz. Maple Syrup
¼ oz. Lemon juce
2 drops AZBL Figgy Pudding Bitters
Splash Ginger Ale

Robert Johnson
Drink: Gentleman Johnson
Robert Johnson was an American blues singer and musician. His landmark recordings in 1936 and 1937 displayed his talents in singing, guitar playing and songwriting, which have continued to influence later generations of musicians in all genres. Johnson died on August 16, 1938 at the young age of 27 after being poisoned by a lover’s husband. Playing mostly street corners, juke joints and Saturday night dances, Johnson had little commercial success during his lifetime. But because of his shadowy, poorly documented life and amazing talents, many legends of the performer have arisen after his death.
