Blue Wasabi offers new, unique roll: Swimming with the Fishes

Last week, I had the opportunity to try Blue Wasabi’s new roll, Swimming with the Fishes, at the Scottsdale location. The roll was released the last week of August and was offered free, for a short time, for anyone who had participated in their recent “name our new roll” contest.

As soon as I arrived, I was greeted by a few of the staff and offered a seat. Service was absolutely excellent, friendly and everyone I interacted with went out of their way to make sure I had everything I needed.

Swimming with the Fishes breakdown: Snow crab mix and asparagus on the inside, topped with salmon sashimi, spinach pesto and balsamic glaze. A little unusual for sushi, right? That’s what I thought!

Swimming with the Fishes

It was delicious, and I devoured every piece much quicker than I probably should have, in public. The spinach pesto had a nice, little “garlic” kick, something not usually incorporated in traditional sushi rolls. Spectacular. It’s not on the menu yet, but will be soon when they roll out the new menus and is priced at $13.50.

I also tried a sample of one of the Blue Wasabi Signature Martinis, the Berry White. By far the most popular drink on the menu, Berry White is concocted with Smirnoff Blueberry Vodka, blueberry infused sweet and sour and white cranberry juice. Blueberry would usually scare me away, but the white cranberry juice paired with it, makes this drink divine.

I had a chance to chat with one of the Staff, Aaron, who is usually seen mixing drinks behind the bar. Since the martini menu seemed to offer mostly girly drinks, I asked him what the men usually order. He says, the Agent Orange (Absolut Mandarin Vodka, triple sec, orange, tangerine and pineapple juices) would be the martini most-ordered by men. So guys, you have something to try off the Martini Menu without having to wonder if it’ll affect your image. If anyone objects, take it up with Aaron! As far as the sushi menu goes, his favorite roll is the Dam Jumper (spicy krab, avocado and cucumber rolled in fresh salmon topped with a touch of sriracha & ponzu sauce), but the crowd favorite seems to be the Marilyn Roll (sashimi sliced tuna, yellowtail & salmon, spicy tuna, krab mix, avocado, cucumber wrapped in pink soy paper).

Dam Jumper: $12.75

Marilyn Roll: $14.75

They’re both on my list to try next!
