With the increase in celiac disease and gluten sensitivities, restaurants are including options for all their diners. May is Celiac Disease Awareness Month, creating the perfect opportunity to shine a light on some unexpected places in town that feature gluten free menu choices as good if not better than their non-gluten free counterparts.

5 of the Best Mainstream Restaurants with Surprising Gluten Free Menu Items

Citizen Public House

7111 E. 5th Ave. | Scottsdale | 480.398.4208 | $$$$
Citizen Public House is known for ensuring that patrons have an exceptional dining adventure, regardless of their dietary requirements. Their menu is infused with gluten free options so tempting that you’d order them if you didn’t have any limitations. The pan seared scallops and gypsy pork shank are stellar entrée options. If you’re looking for something lighter, consider the filet mignon asada tacos. End your meal on a sweet note with a bag ‘o bacon brittle.

Malee’s Thai Bistro
7131 E. Main St. | Scottsdale | 480.947.6042 | $$$$
For those that like their meal with a little kick, Malee’s extensive gluten free menu will do the trick. The eatery is extremely sensitive to cross-contamination issues and looks for every conceivable measure to assure that your meal will be prepared safely. With nine different starters available you really can’t go wrong, but make sure to try the drunken dragon wraps. Tender chicken, a mild curry and coconut milk along with peanuts and cilantro provide a flavorful introduction to a remarkable meal. If you wish to stick with the curry flavors, the evil jungle princess entrée is an ideal option. The layers of character brought on by the chicken, straw mushrooms and coconut milk are distinguished on their own, but when you factor in your individual preference of heat with the curry, you’ll be over the moon!

Tommy V’s Urban Kitchen
