Food Truck Fridays

One of the most fun food adventures to hit the Downtown Phoenix Public Market lately is Food Truck Fridays. Every Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. the trucks gather in the parking lot of the market like a wagon train circling the tables and chairs. The trucks themselves are bright and colorful and just plain fun. The setting itself isn’t hip but it definitely works to encourage people to mingle and socialize. You’ll find yourself seated community style, with everyone talking about what they got and comparing notes.

The brainchild of the recently formed Phoenix Street Food Coalition, the Mobile Food Court is a great venue for the food trucks to pool their resources and keep their costs down in what has become a really hot trend in food – traveling food, that is. Phoenix lags behind other communities like Los Angeles and Portland, Oregon in street food culture, but what better way to support your local farmers’ market and the small, independent food truck businesses than to combine them in one convenient place?

The exact lineup of trucks may vary, but the Friday my friends and I showed up to sample the goodies, we were treated to Short Leash Dogs, Sunshine and Spice, Paradise Melts, Riteway Catering and Sweet Republic. We each hit a different food truck and then shared so we could sample as many different things as possible. Really good food. Seriously good food. And most things are between $5 – $6. Other vendors at Food Truck Fridays and at the market include Jamburritos, Torched Goodness, Pork on a Fork, Kai Catering, Life Lemons, Dr. Hummus and the Tamale Store. What more could you ask for?

So, to quote Neil Diamond from his song “Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show”, “pack up the babies” and “grab the old ladies” and come on down to Food Truck Fridays.
