News | The Churchill : Marketplace Made of Shipping Containers Begins Construction

The Churchill breaks ground

Phoenix is constantly evolving with every new restaurant opening and shopping center breaking ground. I moved here when I was 12 years old and the changes that I have seen are remarkable. I know that makes me sound like an old biddie, with all that “back in my day” rhetoric but it really has been quite remarkable to see how far the city and state have come. News about construction beginning on The Churchill is a reminder of that.

The Churchill : Marketplace Made of Shipping Containers Begins Construction

Named for the Evans Churchill neighborhood where the Valley’s first micro marketplace will be situated, this unique center will consist of re-purposed shipping container. And, yes, you read that right.

For tenants that are wanting to be part of this community-driven center, they will be required to  complete four hours per month of volunteer work, which is intended to encourage the creation of community events.

“You gotta love where you live,” said Hartley Rodie, the project co-partner. “It’s not all about dollars and cents. This project is about people and community.

Rodie has joined forces with co-founder Kell Duncan and has teamed up with Local Studios to construct the 14,000 square foot, using 19 re-purposed shipping containers at 901 N 1st Street in Phoenix

An ample courtyard will serve as the heart of the community space, buzzing with community vibes. Tenants will be able to take part in weekly installations like health and wellness classes, educational and arts activities and more.

The plan for The Churchill is to also have monthly fundraisers for local non-profits as well as weekly service outing that will benefit a diverse group of Valley organizations.

If you want to keep up to date on the developments as well as the remaining tenants of The Churchill, be sure to follow the community on social media while you wait for the Spring 2018 grand opening!
