Celebrate National Oyster Day at Walrus & The Pearl

Celebrate National Oyster Day at Walrus & The Pearl

While we may not immediately associate “coastal cuisine” with Arizona, there are a few places that are getting daily deliveries of the freshest seafood available. The Walrus & The Pearl is one of those spots. What better time to highlight them than just in time for National Oyster Day?

Let’s break it all down, shall we?

What’s the deal with National Oyster Day?

There is a “National” food holiday to honor just about any food that you can think of. August 5th is names as National Oyster Day. Fun fact: If we are to believe everything on the internet, Cassanova was known to start off his day with a breakfast of 50 oysters. Maybe that’s where the idea that oysters are aphrodisiacs came from. It has also been reported that oysters have been consumed by the human population since prehistoric times. My research on these briny mollusks found that there are over 100 species of oysters and they are typically named after the body of water that they are harvested from. Oysters will take on the flavor of the waters in which they live. For example, East Coast oysters are smaller in size, saltier and milder in flavor than their West Coast cousins. West Coast oysters tend to have a creamy and sweeter flavor than those found on the East Coast.

Why should I check out The Walrus & The Pearl on National Oyster Day?

This quaint counter spot will be serving up freshly shucked, seasonal and fresh oysters from diverse regions of the country, like Coromandel Oyster Company in New Zealand, among others. Guests will be invited to pair their oysters with cucumber mignonette, horseradish, along with traditional toppings like lemon and hot sauce. At a loss for what you should pair with your oysters or how to eat them? Executive Chef Stephen Jones will be on hand to help with anything you need. Looking for something a little more adventurous? Opt for the Oyster Shooter with cucumber int shaved ice and shaken vodka. Yes, please!

Oyster prices individually range from $2 to $3 $12 to $15.50 for a half dozen and $24 to $33.50 for a full dozen and, Walrus & the Pearl offers le grande dame for $70 which includes a variety of chef selected oysters.
