Total classic: Celebrate with Chardonnay

Back in the ‘70’s, when parts of California decided to make big-time investments in Chardonnay grape plantings, there were many questions.  But the Judgment of Paris in 1976 settled the issue once and for all.  And Chardonnay quickly became one of California’s “standards”, still remaining a popular buy.

With all the alternative wines that have been introduced over the past 20 years, the importance of a good basic Chardonnay is sometimes understated.  But during special events (or even for no particular reason), the versatility of this great classic reintroduces itself, front and center.

So what’s a good Chard to pick?  When in doubt, never forget the “gold standards” for Chardonnay, the Napas.  Although the initial “French Wins” were taken by other producers, the Robert Mondavi Winery was one of the first to insist on using top quality French and American oak barrels.  This technique continues to this day, and it shows in the wines.

Mondavi’s Napa Valley Chardonnay is one of the best examples of a white wine that possesses a wonderful character, yet it remains approachable and simply enjoyable.  To do this, Mondavi has performed two big balancing acts with this creation.

One is fruit sourcing, with the earthy part coming from Carneros and the tropical-floral fruit portion coming from warmer parts of the valley.  The other is in the fermentation process, with just enough Malolactic fermentation (creates oaky vanilla flavors) blended in to tame the green apple acids from the Chardonnay grape.  Add good barrel aging and viola!

The result is a bouquet of tropical fruit, apple, spice and a tad of oak.  A good taste of this puppy shows quite an enticing balance of acidity and savory structure with just a little “zing” up front.  The finish fades light and refreshing with a little pepper gradually going away with light fruit.

Note of Nuance: One of the best things about Chardonnay is its “morphing” quality.  As the temperature of the wine rises, the mineral aromas give way to fruit and finally the oak takes over.  If you are in the mood to nurse a glass, take a really cold (34 degrees) 8 ounce pour and enjoy it for 45 minutes or so.  The morph will keep you entertained, that’s a promise, especially with Mondavi’s Chard.
