When it comes to cleaning wine glasses, we’ve always been told to hand wash and keep them out of the dishwasher. Oh yeah, the dishwasher can do terrible things to wine glasses, including slimy films, soapy smells, and nasty little spots or rings! And don’t forget that those fragile wine glasses can’t possibly win a “clinking battle” against a juice glass.
But if there were only a way to just load ‘em up, especially after a big dinner party with several white and red wine flights of glasses that need to be cleaned. So ask an expert, like the dishwasher repair man, and you may just get the answer you’re looking for. Here’s what the Maytag guy says: “Here in Phoenix the water is really hard (Calcium Carbonate), so you need to add something acidic to the wash water to neutralize it; the best product for this is LemiShine.”
Agreed, and for wine glasses, the stuff really works. This is true even if you have a water softener, because not 100% if the hardness is removed, plus soft water still leaves spots. In fact, tests with soft water show that putting regular dishwasher soap in the pre-wash dispenser (usually the side with holes in it) and LemiShine in the main wash dispenser produces the best results. After doing this, the wine glasses only need a quick wipe with a dishtowel before putting them away. Now that’s painless.
You may have to vary the technique depending on your water and dishwasher brand, but experiment. No matter what, it is sure worth a shot to get out of the kitchen sooner, especially after a big wine dinner.
As for placing the wine glasses in the rack, put them on the top rack separated by small spaces so they don’t touch each other or other types of glasses. Be sure to check for any soapy smell. With LemiShine, this should be greatly reduced. If this still is an issue, rinse the wine glasses with low-cost white wine before using.
