As the super-hot days of summer fade into fall, outside dining’s lovely alternatives present themselves once again. But don’t put away the summer wines just yet. Many of their wonderful bouquets are just the ticket when enjoying the fading light of an Arizona sunset this time of year.
Imagine of balmy fall evening with a glass of white wine that has some light pear, oak and mango on the bouquet. Then add in a mouthful of citrus and acidity that is bold but not too racy. Follow that with a finish that is on the savory side.
Chase down a few Oysters Rockefeller with one of these Grechetto wines and it’s surprising how well it all goes together. Italian white wines like these certainly do deserve their excellent reputation.
One Grechetto selection that has all of this character Terre De La Custodia’s 2014 Colli Martani Grechetto. And over the past few months, they have been increasing its availability in the U.S. With a price under $15, it is a viable alternative to Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc.
A note on tasting this style of wine. It seems that this varietal really works well when served at 50-55 degrees and served up immediately. Some of the best aromas come from a freshly opened bottle. Because of this, this vino does not need to “breathe”. Take it out on the patio, open, and enjoy.
