Dios Ares: Experience the depth of Rioja affordably

Although not a “newbie” to the American wine market, this little Rioja (based on the Tempranillo grape) has been missed by many who enjoy Spanish wines.  Priced right around $15, “Dios Ares” remains an excellent value as a versatile table wine.Dios Ares: Experience the depth of Rioja affordably

One reason that Spanish Rioja wines should be a part of any collection is their versatility.  Of course, they pair well with Tapas, but they really excel with appetizers that contain a lot of olive oil or dressing.  With just enough acidity and body to balance out the oils, it’s a pairing that simply works.

And with all the health recommendations for foods containing Omega-3 fatty acids, drinking a Rioja along with these specialties is an inviting way to complement the diet.  Riojas also go quite well with vegetables that have been sauteed in olive oil (zucchini, summer squash, etc.).

This health-conscious combination remains at the center of the Med Diet.  BTW- Even though the Mayo clinic says red wine is “optional” for the Med Diet, wine is a staple here in this corner!

What makes this Rioja such a staple?  Consider its subtly floral bouquet containing traces of leather, licorice, and cocoa.  On the palate it has blackberry, spice, and a peppery acidity that follows through into a light white pepper finish.  The low tannins and higher than average acidity is what makes this wine go perfectly with so many Med Diet entrees (including sardines on crackers).

You can find 2009 Dios Ares at Phoenix area Total Wine stores for $15 (rated at 90 points) and the bigger “Riserva” is also available for $25.  Judging by its vintage and flavor, Dios Ares is ready to drink right now or at least sometime over the next 12 months.

Serve after 20 minutes in the fridge (about 65 degrees).
