Party stock up: Creme de Lys Chardonnay

Running sales on Chardonnay seems to be a summer pastime for many of our fine wine retailers here in the valley.  It’s too bad that most Chardonnays don’t age in the home cellar long enough to allow a really serious stock-up when prices dip.  But being able to get a discounted batch for a party is nearly as good a plan, so why not?

As the most popular white wine, Chardonnay has become a summer party essential.  And in situations often associated with impromptu summer gatherings, it is good to have a handle on what brand to choose and where to nab these versatile wines at load ‘em up prices.

A really good pick right now is Crème de Lys Chardonnay.   It’s available at Phoenix area Total Wine stores for $9.99.  Also, the quality level is worth every bit of the 10 bucks, possibly a little more.  The good news is that this price has remained unchanged for at least a year and it may also be offered at AJs and BevMo.

How’s it tasting?  Crème de Lys has a nice (but muted) bouquet of spiced apples and toasted oak.  With a balanced acidity and body reminiscent of honey flavors and crème brûlée, it’s a really great wine with just about any kind of cheese appetizer.  Even at this low price, it will not turn off your Chardonnay drinkers.  But keep a few bottles of better stuff on hand if you expect some of those pesky “wine people” over.

Taking this Chard outside?  Just keep it on ice with the beer.  It will warm up in the glasses when poured then will become more enjoyable right through the appetizers.  Crème de Lys seems to taste best when it warms to about 70 degrees.
