An Alternative White Wine Buy: Victor Hugo Viognier

From time to time, the valley is visited by representatives from one of the country’s most interesting wine regions, Paso Robles. During these visits we get a lot of personal attention from winery experts who we don’t normally get to talk to. And this means inside tips on good wines at great prices.

One of these nicely priced Paso Robles white wines is a 2009 Viognier produced by Victor Hugo Vineyards. It is currently in stock at AJs for about $15. Because good bottles of Viognier are hard to find for under $20, this one is definitely worth a closer look.

One of the best things about a well-done Viognier is its nearly universal appealing bouquet, smooth body and refined finish. These “general” wines are an essential just to have around for occasions when you aren’t sure what’s going to be served as appetizers or who is going to be there. Yep, Viogniers have potluck or take-along written all over them!

The Victor Hugo bursts with melon, honey, and a floral bouquet that is very true to character; but it is slightly more acidic with a lighter body than many other New World Viogniers. This makes it a better choice to consume with cheeses and seafood, but still can be used as a drink-anytime wine. Considering the price, it is very good.

Chill in the fridge for about 45 minutes before serving (55-60 degrees).  Its subtle flavors will come out easily when it’s not too cold.  It may also benefit from several months of aging.
