Summer Refresh: Trader Joe’s “Petit Reserve” Sauvignon Blanc

Posted on: July 29th, 2019 by Tom Peiffer No Comments

Recently, we were talking about the ever-so-important “Hot Weather Quaff”.  But just what does that mean in the world of wine?  To move this along, we took an informal poll and here are the characteristics that were agreed upon as essential:

The Hot Weather Quaffing List

  1. Refreshing & fun
  2. Quenches thirst nicely
  3. Makes you feel cool, not hot
  4. Goes well with light cuisine
  5. Crisp and not too fruity
  6. Diverts your attention away from the HEAT
  7. Low cost and low alcohol

Given all that, many white wines can be moved right to the top for consideration.  And among these, the really light ones like Pinot Grigio, Vermentino, Sauvignon Blanc, and Gruner Veltliner are best.  Where to go from here?

Trader Joe’s “Petit Reserve” Sauvignon Blanc

Well it just so happens that there are lots of Sauvignon Blanc selections available domestically for under $10 this year.  One of these that we ran across last month was a Russian River selection with the Trader Joe’s label.  It is a “Petit Reserve” 2017 Sauvignon Blanc from the Russian River Valley and is nicely priced at $8.99.

You may be able to find something with a more complex flavor combination and balanced acidity, but not easily from a trusted supplier at this price level.  This wine also meets all the items on the Hot Weather Quaffing List.  In addition, it has a good citrus/melon component that works with seafood tapas out by the pool quite well!  That settles it.

If you want to compare this gem with other Sauvignon Blanc selections offered at Trader Joes, try a “Hanna Sauvignon Blanc” or one of their New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs such as Kim Crawford.  These variations should make for an interesting tasting experience.

Serve nicely chilled from the fridge after a couple hours or throw them in the ice bucket with the beer.  This is totally a summer selection.
