Dining Guide | Looking For a Great Spot to Eat Good Friday?

Posted on: March 26th, 2018 by Taryn Jeffries No Comments

Real talk? I don’t know much about Good Friday and all the rules that come along with it. I received an email recently with suggestions for meals that fell in line with Good Friday Dining rules which got me curious. I did what any normal curious gal would do; I opened a new tab on my computer screen and got google-ing! Here’s a little bit about what I learned along with some suggestions on where to eat Good Friday.

  • Good Friday occurs the Friday prior to Easter Sunday. (This one I knew)
  • In the Catholic faith there are two days of obligatory fasting: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday
  • The fasting is not a traditional fast. Participants are allowed to eat one full meal.
  • Apparently fasting is required for all members aged 18 to 19, though I did see some information on the Google machine that noted the age of 14 as well.
  • During the time of Lent, which starts on Ash Wednesday and concludes on Good Friday, participants are not permitted to eat meat on Fridays.

If you want to make that one meal on Good Friday really count, we have a quick list of where to eat and not one of them includes fried fish!

The Breadfruit & Rum Bar
108 E. Pierce St.
Phoenix, AZ 85004

A little Caribbean flair on a Friday night is never a bad thing. Check out the Breadfruit & Rum Bar on Good Friday for a plethora of seafood choices. One of the best is the Pan Seared Steelhead Salmon, which is developed with jerk seasoning, lightly seared with a honey balsamic reduction, tamarind & passion fruit sauce, presented alongside roasted farm-fresh veggies.  Those a bit more adventuresome may be beguiled by the Red Stripe Curried Mangrove Shrimp simmered in a Red Stripe Beer sauce, Caribbean style curry, rice and peas, roasted cabbage, red bell peppers and tropical plantains.

The Henry
4455 E. Camelback Road
Phoenix, AZ 85018

This local Phoenix neighborhood gem offers two impeccable dishes that will absolutely do the trick on Good Friday. The first is the Tuna Poke Bowl served atop sticky rice, sliced avocado, pickled cucumber, roasted shiitake mushrooms, green onions, and a delightful ponzu sauce. Another option is the Skuna Bay Salmon, which is prepared tender and delicious, with fresh lemon glazed beets, arugula, and a toasted almond quinoa.

Kneaders Bakery & Café
Several Valley locations

Catholics looking for something a bit faster and more informal than the other restaurants on this list can swing by any of the 14 Valley-wide locations of Kneaders Bakery & Cafe to grab a delicious meat-free sandwich, salad or soup on Good Friday. Fan favorites include the Famous Albacore tuna mixed with dill, red onions, celery, salt & pepper, mayonnaise, lemon juice, and lettuce, placed on freshly baked hazelnut 12 grain bread. Another delightful option is The Green Avocado Salad, prepared with spring mix, mozzarella cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, avocado, salt & pepper, served with creamy ranch dressing on the side and a fresh roll. Pair either option with the best San Marzano Tomato Basil soup in town for a tasty, meat-free meal and be sure to save room for some homemade pie!

Oregano’s Pizza Bistro

Obviously good pizza is a triumph all day every day. Yet during Lent, it can’t be beat when it’s stacked up with fresh veggies and cheese, instead of pepperoni while complying to the meatless-Friday rule. However, another key dish at Oregano’s on Good Friday is the El Diablo Shrimp Pasta. This bowl of spicy goodness includes a half-pound of substantial, tail-on shrimp, tossed in a special chipotle cream sauce, then blended with Fettuccine pasta, Cotija cheese, and fresh Pico de Gallo. This pasta’s got a slight kick to it, but an icy beer or margarita will surely help wash it down nicely.

Taco Guild
546 E. Osborn Road
Phoenix, AZ 85012
602.264.4143
www.tacoguild.com

This is the place to be for patrons who wish to feel like they’re actually dining inside of a Catholic church. With high-beam ceilings, crosses and stained-glass windows, along with a wealth of meatless options, the Taco Guild could be the new go-to during Fridays in Lent. Opt for the Tropical Ono tacos with Menonita cheese, roasted-tomato salsa, coconut slaw, mango, tomato and cilantro, or the Yucatan Shrimp taco filled with green cabbage, slaw and avocado for incredible meatless fare and this well-known Phoenix Mexican staple.
