Events | Hope Fights Childhood Cancer Campaign at Kneaders

Posted on: September 5th, 2017 by Taryn Jeffries No Comments

What if an elephant could help find a cure for childhood cancer? What if you could help fund research with the simple purchase of precious and delicious cookie? Kneaders Hope Fights Childhood Cancer Campaign is working to make all this a possibility.

Hope Fights Childhood Cancer Campaign at KneadersI come from a crazy large family. I started with 13 aunts and uncles on my mother’s side and two aunts and uncles on my father’s side. To date, I have lost two aunts and uncles on my mother’s side to cancer. These very special people were adults when they passed, but the effects of those losses are felt every day in our family. It’s like when a rock flies up on the freeway and hits your windshield. The initial effect is a chip, but before you know it that chip stretches and grows like a spider web.

Our family has not been affected by childhood cancer, and while I hope that we never are there are far too many families that are. In fact 43 children are diagnosed with cancer every day in the US. You read that right, every day. What’s even more incredible than that statistic is that over the last 20 years only three cancer medications have been specifically approved for children.

Imagine if an elephant could help ensure that other tiny humans wouldn’t have to embark on such harrowing fights. That’s precisely the research that Dr. Joshua Schiffman, a world renowned Oncologist, Hematologist, teen-cancer survivor and respected cancer researcher at Hunstman Cancer Institute is exploring. Sound far-fetched? Humans possess two cancer fighting proteins (p53) in their DNA. Elephants? 40! Dr. Schiffman’s research is tied to exploring how elephant DNA may hold the key to ending cancer for children throughout the globe. How amazing is that?

The Kneaders family has gotten behind Dr. Schiffman and his research after founders Gary and Colleen Worthington learned that their grandson Tanner was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in 2015. After their initial fundraising efforts in 2016, which resulted in $145,000, Dr. Schiffman and his team were able to start their research on how to synthesize the elephant gene and give it to cancer cells, leading to a greater understanding of how it might impact the fight to end cancer for people of all ages.

“We know that cancer is something that many of our customers and employees face every day, and we appreciate their involvement in supporting this very special campaign. A little hope can make a big difference,” says James Worthington, CEO, Kneaders Bakery & Café.

Hope Fights Childhood Cancer Campaign : It All Started With a Cookie

The initial fundraising began with a precious elephant shaped cookie and resulted in an entire movement. Throughout the month of September you can purchase those adorable elephant shaped cookies at your local Kneaders, but this year there are plethora of other themed items that you can purchase online. There are tshirts (for adults and kids), baby boys that are adorned with that perfect blue elephant, a delightfully soft Big Hope plush elephant, Hope Elephant art (perfect for a tiny humans room), ties, necklace, socks, a pop socket for your phone and more. 100% of the sales from the elephant cookies and a portion of the retail items that are sold (both in store and online) will go directly to to Dr. Schiffman and his team at Hunstman Cancer Institute.

“This campaign does more than just sell delicious cookies,” said Dr. Schiffman. “I am one of many researchers at HCI working fervently to find an end to cancer. With the incredible support of Kneaders and their customers, my team and I have been able to take a huge step forward for the thousands of families each year that are informed that their child has cancer.”

If you want to be a part of this campaign and help Kneaders reach their goal of raising $300,000 throughout the month of September its as easy as buying a cookie or any of the other great retail items they have instore or online. You’re even able to make a donation directly to their cause. Kneaders welcomes you to share your story. When you purchase a cookie or any other campaign item, take a photo and share it on social media using #HopeFightsChildhoodCancer or #SockItToCancerWithHope. You are also encouraged to share your personal experiences with cancer or a memory of a loved one who has passed from cancer at hope@kneaders.com. Your story may be featured on the Kneaders website.

PhoenixBites has partnered with Kneaders and their Hope Fights Childhood Cancer Campaign to bring you a special gift basket that will feature most of the retail campaign items (everything you see in the photos above.)

Entering is easy, you just need to share this article on any social media channel of your choice using the hashtags mentioned below and tagging PhoenixBites in your post. The campaign will run through the end of the month and so will our contest, so you have until September 30th to share as many times as you would like. The more awareness that is brought to the campaign the closer Kneaders will get to that goal of $300,000.

Good luck and lets work together to find a cure for childhood cancer.
