Wine | Novelity Wine Labels: For Fun and Not Too Fancy

Posted on: August 19th, 2017 by Tom Peiffer No Comments

Crazy wine labels are a lot of fun, especially the animal ones.  But that does not exclude them from the standard “buyer beware” cautions.  Often you must to be even more careful, because some producers use a catchy label to sell a substandard product.

Novelity Wine Labels- For Fun and Not Too FancyOne of the more eye-catching bottle adornments out there this season features a red label showing an uncomfortable little guy with a plunger stuck on his head.  What does that say about the wine within?

Certainly, a plumbing plunger is not normally associated with things that are clean and pure, and likely not very good-tasting.  However, it does catch the eye!

But in this case the wine is actually quite good.  It is simply called Plungerhead, features a newly-designed label (but the little plunger guy remains), and is available in several red varietals, even a Petite Syrah.  Most are easy drinking and certainly will stand out when uncorked at a tailgate party.

Their Zinfandel is a particularly nice partner with a meatball sub.  With a bit of smoky cedar on the bouquet along with the Zin’s spicy, jammy fruit, it is a classy compliment to the simplicity of red Italian sauce, ground beef, grated cheese topping, and a big sub roll.  Hey mister Plungerhead, you go real nice with that sub sandwich, especially when enjoyed with fellow fans.

Their Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Syrah are also great, but you’ll have to decide the pairing for yourself.  Barbeque chicken, brats or burgers are good partner bets, but both wines are dryer and bolder than the Zin.

You can find the Zin at Total Wine for about $15.  The new label is working its way into distribution so expect a combination of previous and new label styles on the shelf.

Best if served after keeping in the fridge for about 40 minutes (50 degrees).  The fruity finish is better when served a little on the cool side, especially outdoors.

About the Author - Tom Peiffer

Tom has been an avid wine consumer and collector for over 20 years. This pastime has taken he and his family on many visits to wine growing regions, including Arizona. During these excursions, with the accompanying tastings and lectures, it became clear that there is no "magic bullet" wine. For each wine contains its own character, strong points, and weaknesses. Sharing these experiences to help anyone purchase locally available wines is his goal.
