When I was growing up in Illinois we didn’t do a lot of dining out and treats were few and far between. On very special occasions my aunt, uncle and a whole slew of cousins that my aunt cared for would take us out for root beer floats. Having these types of outings so spread apart really made them special to all of us and I try to remember that when taking my boys out together and separately.

If you are looking to build your own special memories with your kids, don’t forget that August 6th is National Root Beer Float Day. If you happen to be in Central Phoenix, between 10am and 10on, TEXAZ Grill has a special tailor made for you and your brood. You can get a fancified gourmet root beer float for only $5. This special treat is made up of a rich, craft brewed Abita Root Beer and a healthy scoop of Blue Bell Vanilla Ice Cream, a perfect complement to the hearty American comfort foods you’ll find on the restaurant’s menu.

Even though theories differ on who first floated ice cream in their root beer, there’s no dispute that it’s an American original. For the history buffs out there, the story goes that Philadelphia pharmacist Charles Hires first perfected root beer in the 1870s. His blend, with a mingling of tree and plant essences, turned out to be so popular that in 1927 a young man named John Marriott opened a small root beer stand in Washington D.C., which ultimately developed into the international hotel chain. Meanwhile, rival root beer purveyors, A&W, helped form the franchised fast food restaurant – up until the 1960s, there were actually more A&W’s than McDonald’s in America.

TEXAZ Grill’s root beer float formula is also a salute to owner/cook, Steve Freidkin’s Texas and Louisiana roots as Abita Brewing Company is a beloved Louisiana craft brewer and Blue Bell Ice Cream is a famed Texas Creamery. Plus, if you come by for brunch starting at 10 am you can enjoy the Paris Texas Toast, their famous Eggs Bubba, and Biscuits and Gravy and follow it up with a delightful root beer float and a side of treasured family memories!
