New Law Changes Wine Club Shipments to Arizona Residents

Posted on: February 16th, 2017 by Tom Peiffer No Comments

Here in Arizona it is a convenient option to regularly receive direct wine deliveries from both in-state and out-of-state wineries.  Last year’s changes in state laws have made it easier for wine clubs, of even the largest of wineries, to send shipments directly to AZ residents.

New Law Changes Wine Club Shipments to Arizona ResidentsFor this, direct literally means “direct to your doorstep”.  It all occurs without involving a liquor distributor.  And wineries (especially in California) are wasting no time in getting themselves setup under the new regulations!

The new law creates the requirement of a “license” that wineries must obtain before shipping directly into Arizona.  Generally, the best approach is to make sure that the winery has the license before placing an order with them.  They should be able to clearly describe their policy regarding shipping to your Arizona address and should also keep you updated should the situation change.

Here are a few generalities that are “almost always true”, regarding wine club shipments to Arizona addresses:

  1. You must be 21 or older to receive a shipment and must be present to sign for it.
  2. If the out-of-state winery has received a license from Arizona, they can ship to addresses here.
  3. If you order from an Arizona winery, they can also ship to your residence.
  4. You should delay shipments (if not using refrigerated delivery systems) when the daily temperature is over 85 degrees, heat damages wine.

Club memberships are an excellent way to keep receiving your favorite wine selections.  Most vintners have a basic discounted club list to which you can add more bottles as needed.  It is a great way to expand your horizons because many wineries make their “very special” low volume bottling lots exclusively available to wine club members.

Once you have setup an account, you can rely on their release schedule or custom order via phone or web from most wineries and they will ship promptly.  Just be sure to have someone who is at least 21 years old available to sign for it on the day it arrives.  UPS and FedEx have excellent personalized tracking systems to keep you updated on the shipment’s progress.

Tom has been an avid wine consumer and collector for over 20 years. This pastime has taken he and his family on many visits to wine growing regions, including Arizona. During these excursions, with the accompanying tastings and lectures, it became clear that there is no "magic bullet" wine. For each wine contains its own character, strong points, and weaknesses. Sharing these experiences to help anyone purchase locally available wines is his goal.
