US Apple Association shares reults of 3 studies on the health benefits o applesAn apple a day keeps the doctor away – and builds strong bodies from head to toe. The U.S. Apple Association is sharing new research that suggests adding apples to your daily fare is an easy way to keep your whole body in tip-top shape and may help avoid life-threatening illnesses.

“Research shows apples are a natural superfood, packed with powerful antioxidants and nutrients that have been linked to an impressive range of health benefits,” said Wendy Brannen, Director of Consumer Health and Public Relations, USApple. “Whether you’re taking preventative steps to avoid diseases like Alzheimer’s and cancer, or just trying to shed those last five pounds, apples are a great solution.”

According to three recent studies, apple consumption can help fight many of the ailments that Americans commonly struggle with including obesity, heart disease and high cholesterol.

Heart Health

In a recent debate, cardiologists argued that statins do more harm than good, especially for those who do not already have heart disease. Instead, people would benefit from eating an apple a day to prevent heart attacks, strokes, and other vascular diseases.

Lower Cholesterol

Recent studies performed by the Arthritis Foundation, found evidence to support claims that eating apples on a daily basis may lower levels of cholesterol as well as C-reactive protein (CRP), a key marker of inflammation in the blood.  In fact, in the study of 160 women ages 45 to 65, participants who ate apples every day for six months saw lower LDL cholesterol levels by 23 percent as well as a 32 percent decrease in CRP.

Weight Loss/Maintenance

Researchers at Harvard University found a higher intake of foods rich in flavonols, flavan-3-ols , anthocyanins, and flavonoids, all of which are found in apples, was associated with less weight gain among adults aged 27-65 and may contribute to the prevention of obesity and its potential consequences.

Consider adding apples to your diet for an all-around healthier you.
