Win it: A holiday meal from Schwan’s

Posted on: November 19th, 2013 by Amy Martin 26 Comments

With Thanksgiving just over a week away and holiday parties following soon after, if you haven’t started already, it’s time to get planning your holiday cooking. With out-of-town family and friends coming to visit and dropping by to deliver holiday gifts, stock up your freezer with holiday essentials so you can be ready to entertain in a pinch!

Schwan’s Home Service has a few holiday items to make your holiday entertaining a breeze. There’s always been something so comforting to me about Schwan’s. Growing up, I used to see the pale yellow delivery trucks in my neighborhood almost every week and Schwan’s ice cream was a huge favorite in my house. Ever since, Schwan’s has always been comfort food for me. Kinda like your mom’s meatloaf… even if you have the option of a super-fancy, restaurant quality meal, sometimes you just want your mom’s meatloaf and mashed potatoes.

Having been in business since 1952, Schwan’s has developed huge recognition for delivering frozen meals and convenience foods to doorsteps around the country. Though they began as an ice cream delivery service, they now offer much more including breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals. Fruits and veggies are picked at the peak of harvest and flash-frozen to preserve taste and quality. In fact, all foods are flash-frozen and kept at a constant temperature to ensure that items are never thawed, then re-frozen. With quality surpassing most of what you’ll find in the frozen foods isle at your grocery store, Schwan’s seems like a no-brainer for busy families who don’t have time to cook or grocery shop. Ordering is easy. You can request to have one of their eco-friendly, yellow delivery trucks stop by your door and order directly from your local sales representative (if you aren’t home when they’re ready to deliver, they’ll leave your food at your doorstep in freezer bags), or you can order online through their mail order service – there’s no order minimum.

I had the opportunity to taste a few of the holiday items. I received their premium naturally-smoked boneless Sliced Ham that arrives frozen, but fully cooked and ready to serve (no slicing required). Prep was super easy… after thawing, just pop it in the oven in it’s own bag until it’s hot all the way through.

The ham had that sweet smokiness that I love and we ended up with tons of leftovers for my family of three. They made for great sandwiches and I even whipped up a quick Ham and Potato Soup to use up the remaining slices.

To pair with your holiday ham dinner, try the seasoned Petite Brussels Sprouts and Roasted Sweet Potatoes as side dishes. The petite Brussels are adorable (we even got the toddler to eat a few!) and come light seasoned with sea salt, olive oil and cracked pepper. If you’re in a hurry, just make them as-is… or experiment with different spices and sauces to match your meal. The Roasted Sweet Potatoes are seasoned with just a tad of sugar to bring out the sweetness. Serve them as-is or use them to make the classic holiday sweet potato and marshmallow casserole.

Both bags of Brussels sprouts and sweet potatoes lasted my family well over one evening and would have been more than plenty had we had dinner guests.

For dessert, we were very excited to receive their Limited Edition Red Velvet Cheesecake. Unlike ordinary cheesecakes, the bottom layer is a spongy, rich red velvet cake with chocolate chips topped with fluffy white chocolate cheesecake then decorated with white and dark chocolate curls. The cheesecake is pre-sliced and serves 14 people. FOURTEEN!
