Hillside Spot casual dining: Gourmet food and wine in the ‘Tuke

Posted on: September 13th, 2013 by Tom Peiffer No Comments

For many of us, when deciding where to go for an informal dining experience, great food and wine are essentials to consider in the final choice.  And you can bet that good restaurants know all too well about this basic key to success.

But the only the best restaurants totally understand that you can’t have one (cuisine) without considering the other (wine).  Yep, things must “pair” to be great.  Luckily for us, the owners of Ahwatukee’s Hillside Spot were on top of this from day one.  Now it just keeps getting better.

With a new dinner menu featuring their traditional specialties plus a few added Southwestern favorites, more customers are taking notice.  Featuring a larger selection of wine and beer, Ahwatukee’s diversification of exciting eateries has moved up a notch.

Locally owned by Doug Robson’s culinary team, the Hillside Spot’s excellence as an informal gathering eatery has been steadily increasing in popularity since it opened in 2009.  They have also kept improving their wine selection to maintain pace with the expanded evening menu.

This interesting list of nice vinos features a well-planned smattering of selections including such favorites as “The Ned” Sauvignon Blanc and “CMS” red blend.  All in all, there are about 20 selections, perfect for an informal dining experience, and sure to be expanded over time.  As for beer, that list is also quite ample.

Of course they offer an added bonus; their wine & beer selections can be purchased from the fridge up front and bagged for takeout.  They also offer any of their bottles of wine at half price when ordered with dinner on Wednesday evenings.  Not bad, slashing the cost of their most expensive wine to under $35, just because it’s “hump day”.  Such a deal.

So here’s to Hillside’s expansion into our evening life!  Keep the great wines coming and we’ll be back often.  This is a welcome addition that will surely improve on what were once somewhat limited dining choices for Ahwatukee residents just a few short years ago.

About the Author - Tom Peiffer

Tom has been an avid wine consumer and collector for over 20 years. This pastime has taken he and his family on many visits to wine growing regions, including Arizona. During these excursions, with the accompanying tastings and lectures, it became clear that there is no "magic bullet" wine. For each wine contains its own character, strong points, and weaknesses. Sharing these experiences to help anyone purchase locally available wines is his goal.
