Floral eye candy and Sean Minor Chardonnay

Posted on: November 12th, 2012 by Tom Peiffer No Comments

Moving right along with ways to celebrate the retreat of the heat, why not arrange for a little Wine and Roses to please those special people this weekend?  If not just for appearances, this magic combination is sure to hasten the “summer is over” relief that all of us share as the Arizona temperature slowly becomes comfortable again.

The reason that this works is an obscure fact about wine that is not often talked about.  Wine can actually taste different when you change the visual cues in the room where it’s served.  Big wineries know this, and always have plenty of flowers on the table at wine dinners, so you can enjoy the ambiance while tasting the wine and savoring the food.

Yep, friends and flowers work every time.  Wineries realize that with the correct surroundings, food pairings become less important, while the memories you take away from the gathering may stay with you for a lifetime.  Of course, the wineries are betting that you will pick up another bottle when you see it in the store, their ulterior motive.

So anyway, you can apply this little hint personally.  Just place a few nice flowers around the table at your next wine tasting.  Your guests are sure to love it and remember it as “great time”, even if the cuisine was not quite perfect.

And a good wine to add with that floral display is Sean Minor’s 2010 Chardonnay.  It is not a well-known label (4 bears and all) but it measures up to the standard quite well.  With a bouquet of nicely pronounced green apples plus a fresh baked bread background, it’s just perfect to sniff white looking at a floral arrangement.  It backs it up with a well-defined body of balanced acid and fruit with no oakiness, but a little spice in the finish.  Any seafood will do as a partner, but the pairing is not such a big deal with the right appointments in the room.

This Chardonnay is now being offered at Phoenix area AJs during their current sale.  As part of the celebration, Sean Minor Chardonnay is marked down to $12.99 as a “treasure” selection.

Serve a little on the cold side after 60 minutes in the fridge (50-55 degrees).  Here’s to a big goodbye for the heat!

About the Author - Tom Peiffer

Tom has been an avid wine consumer and collector for over 20 years. This pastime has taken he and his family on many visits to wine growing regions, including Arizona. During these excursions, with the accompanying tastings and lectures, it became clear that there is no "magic bullet" wine. For each wine contains its own character, strong points, and weaknesses. Sharing these experiences to help anyone purchase locally available wines is his goal.
