Schwan’s: Convenience delivered at your door (and a giveaway!)

Posted on: October 2nd, 2012 by Amy Martin 1 Comment

THIS GIVEAWAY HAS ENDED.

In a busy world full of tight schedules, late work hours, kids’ homework and social commitments, time is our most valuable asset and convenience is key. For many families, crafting a home-cooked meal from scratch using fresh ingredients doesn’t always fit into the weeknight schedule. Flavorless, frozen dinners and boring, store-bought pizzas fill our freezers and leave us unsatisfied. But who says that cutting corners in the kitchen must equal sacrificing flavor?

Having been in business since 1952, Schwan’s has developed huge recognition for delivering frozen meals and convenience foods to doorsteps around the country. Though they began as an ice cream delivery service, they now offer over 350 frozen food options including breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals. Fruits and veggies are picked at the peak of harvest and flash-frozen to preserve taste and quality. In fact, all foods are flash-frozen and kept at a constant temperature to ensure that items are never thawed, then re-frozen. With quality surpassing most of what you’ll find in the frozen foods isle at your grocery store, Schwan’s seems like a no-brainer for busy families who don’t have time to cook or grocery shop.

Ordering is easy. You can request to have one of their eco-friendly, yellow delivery trucks stop by your door and order directly from your local sales representative (if you aren’t home when they’re ready to deliver, they’ll leave your food at your doorstep in freezer bags), or you can order online through their mail order service – there’s no order minimum.

I tested a couple of items from their seasonal Top 10 Foods list through their mail order service. Check out the fall lineup here as they list new uses and recipe ideas for some of their signature items and new products too. I sampled the Lasagna Roll-ups and the Oven Baked Chicken Breast. My products arrived at my doorstep in an ice chest packaged with dry ice to ensure they wouldn’t thaw in this scorching, Arizona heat.

The Lasagna Roll-ups are packaged four to a box and one roll-up is plenty for a serving. The individually hand-rolled pasta sheets are stuffed with five cheeses (Ricotta, Romano, Mozzarella, Fontina and Parmesan) and sold plain so your family can add your favorite pasta sauce or get creative with other preparations. Personally, I loved that they come ‘unsauced’ so that lasagna can transform into more than just Italian fare. If you’re in a rush and looking for convenience, just add a jar marinara. Or, if you want to create more of a home-made meal, make up a batch of from-scratch pasta sauce to pour over yourself. The pasta shells nearly doubled in size when baking and the filling of melted cheeses was soft, fluffy and creamy all at the same time.

Included with the Lasagna Roll-ups was a recipe pamphlet of out-of-the-box ideas like the Southwest Cheese Stuffed Pablano (lasagna rolls rest inside a slit Pablano pepper with a spicy, Southwestern sauce made from scratch) and the Sweet Savory Lasagna Roll with Bacon Butter Sauce (bacon and butter in the same recipe? Feed me!!). There was even a recipe for Plum Dessert Lasagna utilizing fresh plums and a brown sugar/butter/lemon juice sauce. Nom.

Even more versatile was the Oven Baked Chicken Breast which baked up so surprisingly crisp and golden that I didn’t miss my deep fryer. I particularly loved using them to make simple chicken sandwiches on a soft bun with crisp lettuce, avocado and a schmear of creamy, herb dressing. Its uses are endless and it’s especially great for families of picky eaters and can easily be prepared to anyone’s taste. My toddler enjoyed them as chicken “nuggets” with BBQ sauce, while the grownups ate them as sandwiches or atop greens and drizzled with a simple white wine/lemon sauce. They can be a real time saver if you’re used to cooking up separate meals for your kids. Bake them the night before and you have a quick to-go lunch for the next day!

If you follow a health-conscious diet, check out their LiveSmart products for healthier meal choices. They also offer Meal Plans for Hearth Health, Diabetes-Friendly and Weight Management. All products come with a 100% guarantee.
