5 Tips to Create an Efficient Kitchen

Kitchens are often the heart of a home as the hub of food preparation and social activity. It’s where the kids enjoy after-school snacks or where you invite guests for a cup of tea. Kitchens get a lot of foot-traffic because they are so versatile. But they also grow disorganized with daily use. Spend more time cooking, gathering and hosting in a kitchen that is customized to meet all of your needs and less time searching for spatulas.

Here are the five tips to help you create an efficient kitchen.

Sink

Touchless faucets allow speedy food prep and keep germs contained. With a simple waving gesture you can trigger the motion sensor on and off, freeing up your hands to rinse vegetables or a stack of dishes. Plus you save water because the sink automatically turns off between rinses.

Apron sinks provide the most space and prevent water from splashing out. But, any oversized, deep sink will contain the mess while you clean, meaning you don’t have to wash dishes as you cook. A double sink provides the most functionality; save one side for soiled dishes and the other for rinsing. Spring for a fancy commercial-style nozzle sprayer if you want to make rinsing dirty dishes a breeze.

Layout

An ideal kitchen layout should accommodate social interaction for times when you need to cook and entertain guests. Kitchens that connect to other living spaces feel spacious and allow you to carry on conversations with those in adjacent rooms. Consider taking down a wall while remodeling or relocating to a home with an open kitchen layout.

An additional feature to consider if you have room is a kitchen island. Stools are an easy addition to the island to create a natural gathering place.

Appliances

Professional grade appliances provide useful features not found in standard appliances. For example, professional grade refrigerators allow separate temperature settings for each compartment. These controls extend the life of your produce and keep your beverages the right temperature for immediate consumption. Drawer-style dishwashers are half the size of standard dishwashers and consume less water and energy. If you stack two of these dishwashers in the space of a regular one, you can run several smaller, more economical loads than one large load. Double ovens are also desirable if your household bakes frequently.

Surfaces

Kitchen surfaces should be long-lasting, cost-effective and low-maintenance. Preferably, you want something that tolerates hot pots and counter-top chopping. Most people opt for marble counter tops, but manufactured stone products are a compelling alternative. Both are scratch-proof, stain-resistant, and heat resistant. However, manufactured stone has a cheaper up-front cost and requires far less maintenance than marble.

Storage

Kitchen storage should make your cookware accessible and visible. You don’t want to dig through multiple cabinets for measuring cups as you scramble to make a quick meal after work.

Open shelving, modeled after kitchen restaurants, is usually the most accessible storage design. You can either purchase door-less cabinets or floating shelves. Re-purpose mason jars and vases to hold utensils and silverware right on the counter. These efficient changes also make it easy for anyone unloading the dishwasher to see where items belong.

Build open shelves into your kitchen island in place of drawers for a non-intrusive location to store pots and pans. Alternatively, install a pot rack on the ceiling and suspend your cookware as decor and for functionality.
