New happenings at The Saguaro Hotel

Posted on: January 31st, 2012 by Amy Martin 2 Comments

The folks at The Saguaro Hotel down haven’t slowed down since the Grand Opening and start of its two resident restaurants, Old Town Whiskey and Distrito. With new happenings plotted for the coming months, they’ve proved that the new hotspot hasn’t shown us all we have to look forward to yet.

Check out what the cool kids at The Saguaro Hotel have penciled in

  • Speakeasy Sundays – Swanky! Check their Facebook page on Sundays for the night’s password for discounted drinks from their prohibition cocktail list.
  • Classic Album Thursdays – Head in to Old Town Whiskey on Thursdays beginning at 8pm for their new shindig, Classic Album Thursdays. Each week, they’ll pick a year and play the classic album from said year in its entirety, throwing a few other memorable songs into the mix and offering a themed cocktail.
  • Cooking Class Series – The series just kicked off on January 29 with a pickling theme. Looks like the next class is scheduled for March 25 where you’ll learn how to make tamales, tacos, huaraches and quesadillas. Tickets are expected to sell quickly and there are only 20 spots available, so keep an eye out on their Facebook page when sales begin! Cost is only $30 and will include a cocktail or beer, as well as all your ingredients and tools needed for the instruction.
  • Happy Hour – Happy Hours are now in effect at both restaurants. Visit Old Town Whiskey every day from 4pm-7pm for HH specials, and Distrito from 5pm-7pm.

Have you been to Distrito for dinner yet? We had the opportunity to check it out a few weeks ago. Some highlights of our meal included the starters and ceviche: The Distrito Guacamole with Cotija cheese and crab ($15), Salsa Mexicana ($7), Atun Ceviche (yellowfin tuna, Serrano-coconut sauce, lime sorbet, tomatillo, tostadita | $13), and the Pulpo Ceviche (octopus, lime, Serrano chile, micro cilantro | $12).

Taryn enjoyed a few of their meat-free dishes including Distrito’s take on flatbreads, the Huarache de Hongos (forest mushrooms, huitlacoche sauce, queso mixto, black truffle, corn shoot | $12), and Angelica’s Fresa Salad (Strawberries, spinach, melon, cabrales, Serrano-balsamic vinaigrette, poppy seeds | $10).

Other favorites included the winning taco from the Arizona Taco Festival, Tacos de Hamachi (Chipotle Remoulade, Avocado, Red Cabbage, Lime | $16), the restaurant’s house made Chorizo Rojo ($16), the Carne en Adobo (Black Angus Beef Brisket with Wet Adobo Rub | $18).

But, my personal favorite of the evening? Their Tacos de Lengua made with veal tongue, cebolla criolla, and salsa verde. Yum.

If you are a sangria drinker, you just got lucky. Distrito’s sangria easily wins my vote for best in the Valley. Red or white, they’re both delightful.
