Charley’s Spicy Asian BBQ Sandwich makes a comeback

Posted on: August 23rd, 2010 by Amy Martin No Comments

Monday, August 16th, the spicy Asian BBQ sandwich was released again on the Charley’s menu. The sandwich is set to run for 8 to 10 weeks and has been a hit every time it has made a special appearance. Last week, I had the opportunity to visit the Charley’s location at Deer Valley Town Center in Phoenix to try it for myself.

First off, I must say that my visit was (without a doubt) the best experience I have had during a review thus far. Jim Novak, franchise owner of four Charley’s Grilled Subs locations throughout the valley, and his staff were incredibly generous and welcoming to me. I could not have asked for a better experience.

The spicy Asian BBQ sandwich is served on a fresh-baked bun, piled high with 100% all USDA choice meat and grilled onions, then slathered with their signature spicy Asian BBQ sauce and topped with provolone cheese. You can add lettuce and tomato if you like, but the sandwich is perfect as is. Since their sandwiches are made to order (watch them cook your meal and demonstrate their knife skills – those cooks are talented!), you’ll receive a hot, fresh sandwich without the worry of how long it’s been sitting under a heat lamp. The spicy Asian BBQ sauce is just that – spicy and slight sweet (pineapple is definitely prominent) with an ethnic flair.  Think “teriyaki meets red chili pepper”. You can make your meal a gourmet combo by adding fries topped with melted cheese and a generous helping of hot bacon bits and a drink. Don’t pass up the fries – they’re incredibly good. All in all, it was a fantastic meal.

The Charley’s location at Deer Valley Town Center opened in 1999 and was the first Charley’s in Arizona. Every employee on staff was genuinely happy to greet each customer that walked through the door during my visit. Their busiest time of day is lunchtime from 11:00am-2:00pm, but don’t let that scare you away. They are fully prepared for the crowds and well-staffed to make sure you won’t have to wait long. Adequate seating is available both indoors and outside on the patio. This Charley’s was impeccably clean (I even got to take a peek in the kitchen – spotless!) which explains the top-notch ratings they’ve received from the health department.

If spicy isn’t your thing, try the Philly Cheese Steak, Philly Chicken or Chicken Buffalo sandwiches as those are the top three most-requested menu items. Grab a punch card next time you’re there (Buy any 7 subs or grilled salads and get the 8th free) and receive double punches on Mondays!

Also, make a note: Every Tuesday, all day, get any foot long sandwich for $5.99. Great deal, right?

I will definitely be back again!
